Hooptown Bracketology Picks Tournament Winners with Real Estate Data

Coldwell Banker is upping the ante on creative ways to fill out brackets for the Men’s Basketball Tournament. Using the power of big data via the brand’s proprietary app CBx, Coldwell Banker is picking this year’s Tournament winners based on real estate stats.
The project is called Hooptown Bracketology and includes five real estate themed brackets:

1. Most Expensive Hooptown: Long Island University-Brooklyn: Brooklyn, N.Y.

Play well in the Tournament, sign with the NBA and you might be able to score a home in these Most Expensive Hooptowns. The winning school in this bracket is from the hooptown with the highest average residential home sales price based on 2017 annual data. In this case, that “town” is Brooklyn with an average sales price $1,233,265. LIU’s Brooklyn Campus is located in Downtown Brooklyn close to public transportation, Brooklyn Bridge Park and countless bars and restaurants. The LIU Blackbirds may be a surprise addition to this year’s Tournament, but Brooklyn is certainly not a surprise as an expensive hooptown.

2. Most Affordable Hooptown: University of Oklahoma: Norman, Okla.

Tournament tickets aren’t cheap. Save on your mortgage and splurge on the games with these Most Affordable Hooptowns. The winning school in this bracket is from the hooptown with the lowest average residential home sales price based on 2017 annual data.
One of the few things Oklahoma and Brooklyn have in common is that they both inspired hit Broadway musicals and of course they both won brackets in the first ever Hooptown Bracketology. The average sales price in Norman is $55,344.

3. Easiest Hooptown to Move to: Loyola University Chicago: Chicago, Ill.

Making it to the Tournament doesn’t come easy, but moving to these hooptowns does. The winning school in this bracket is from the hooptown with the most listings on the market as of February 13, 2018.
Chicago’s city limits are packed with desirable listings. The Loyola Campus is located along beautiful Lake Michigan and boasts close to 12,000 listings currently on the market. The city is arguably one of the country’s best hooptowns with successful high school, college and professional teams. Plus, add it to the list of hooptowns with hit Broadway musicals.

4. Newest Hooptown: Duke University: Durham, N.C.

It’s time for the freshmen to have their shining moment just like these New Hooptowns. The winning school in this bracket is from the hooptown with the newest homes based on the average build-year as of October 2017.
Duke is one of the best known programs in college basketball and a basketball not just real estate contender in this year’s tournament. The average listing in Duke’s hometown of Durham was built in 2010. The Duke Blue Devils titles are even newer than their listings with their newest win coming in 2015.

5. Best Hooptown for Singles: University of Michigan: Ann Arbor, Mich.

Looking for love and basketball isn’t always easy. Luckily, these hooptowns have plenty of single adults so you’ll have lots of shots to find love. The winning school in this bracket is from the hooptown with the highest percentage of single adults.
Ann Arbor is the quintessential college and according to our research a great town for singles looking for love. The town boasts 6,729 single adults and like Duke their team is a contender in this year’s actual tournament.

We’ll be keeping track to see how each of our brackets perform. It’s unlikely we’ll have a perfect bracket, especially given that we have a 16th seed winning it all. We’ll be scoring our brackets daily (just like an office pool). Below is how the points work.
1 point per correct pick in the first round (32 possible points total)
2 points per correct pick in the second round (64 possible points)
4 points per correct pick in the third round (96 possible points total)
8 points per correct pick in the fourth round (128 possible points total)
16 points per correct pick in the fifth round (160 possible points total)
32 points per correct pick in the sixth round (192 possible points total)
